Dear Resident,

You may be aware that your home is in the area covered by Oakfield Residents’ Association which exists to maintain the character of the area and to promote tidy streets and neighbourly co-operation.

With that in mind we list below details of the Council waste disposal and re-cycling system so that you are aware of the details to help you to dispose of your waste correctly.

The Council provides residents with black wheely bins, black recycling boxes, brown food waste boxes and (for an additional charge) green wheely bins.

Putting rubbish in the wrong receptacle results in rubbish not being taken away and makes the streets very dirty and untidy.

To help you:

BLACK BOXES are for paper, glass bottles, tin cans, batteries, shoes tied in pairs and paper

These items should be sorted in the box and are collected weekly.

GREEN RE-CYCLING BOXES. are plastic containers (except black or rigid plastic), tetrapaks, cans, and flattened cardboard. Collected weekly

BROWN CADDIES are only for compostable food waste. They should be lined with newspaper or any plastic bag. They should never be left open as that will attract vermin. They should always be taken in after collection! Collected weekly.

GREEN WHEELY BINS are for compostable garden waste only. Collected fortnightly

BROWN BAGS (With Council Logo) can be bought for £1 at Cotham Hardware and can be used for garden waste if you don’t have a green wheely bin. Collected weekly.

BLACK WHEELY BINS are for all other rubbish. Collected fortnightly.

CARDBOARD for collection can either be put in the green recycling boxes or left weighed down under the black box or those awful brown caddys. Collected weekly

ADDITIONAL BAGS AND OVERLOADED BINS will not be taken. The lids of the wheely bins must be closed shut.

LARGE ITEMS: The council offers a collection service for large items such as mattresses, wardrobes sofas etc. The collection costs £15 for up to a maximum of three items. Call them on 0117 922 2100 to make arrangements or e mail "Council Rubbish dept" <cleansing.client@bristol.gov.uk>, There is no excuse for leaving items on the pavement or in your front garden! They won’t vapourize!

CHRISTMAS TREES The binmen take Christmas trees on two collection days immediately after new year along with the compostable collection.

SPECIAL SCHEME IN Southleigh Road, South Parade and Oakfield Grove

Since 2010 a new scheme is being tested in these streets. Communal bin areas are provided within 50 metres of each house in order to clear the street of the clutter of dozens of wheely bins and improve the appearance of the streets. Please put all rubbish in the appropriate bins which will be emptied twice weekly.

PLEASE REPORT ANY INCIDENTS OF FLY TIPPING AT THE MRCs to  help@bristolwastecompany.co.uk

Finally and most importantly, you should put the bins and boxes out only on the evening before the day of collection and must not leave your bins, caddies or black boxes on the road or pavement after collection day. They must be taken in or they will be removed by the council. Apart from making the area a mess, they are a danger to pedestrians, unpleasant to look at  and a health hazard.

Thank you for your co-operation in helping us to keep our area tidy and clean.

This page has been designed so that you can print it out and pass to neighbours or new residents who are unaware of the re-cycling and rubbish disposal regulations. You may also like to print a copy of our welcome letter to give to newcomers.
